Vitamin supplements should be paired with a healthy diet in order to make up for deficiencies, not to make up for a lack of eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If taken at the correct dosage, multivitamins can be good for you. But there is no substitute for good, nutritional food.(medicaldaily)

Dietary supplements send an average of 23,000 people to the emergency room each year, a new study* estimates. It’s the first time anyone has come up with national numbers on the problem. The study found supplements for weight loss and energy were the most dangerous, and heart issues were the most common problem with those kinds of supplements. Women, preschoolers, and seniors were at greatest risk.
Dietary supplements are regulated under the presumption of safety i.e. exempted from safety testing. But, some products on the market today contain sketchy or even illegal ingredients, including prescription drugs that may or may not be listed on the bottle. The report of the National Commission of the United States Institutes of Health said: "There is evidence that certain components of the [multi-vitamin and mineral] supplements can cause adverse effects ... The laws regulating dietary supplements are so weak that some manufacturers just ignore them.

There are a number of supplements that contain only one kind of vitamins. i.e. isolated vitamin in the pill. This multi-million-dollar industry with a large number of followers and lobbyists all over the world. Of course, vitamin-containing food necessary for our health, but here's the problem.
  1) isolated (synthetic) vitamins are digested much worse (or not absorbed at all) by the body, in contradistinction to natural-food vitamins in its natural form.
  2) today clear, that certain vitamins (e.g., vitamin A) in excess of the recommended daily intake of about 3000 IU, eventually leads to osteoporosis and increases the risk of lung cancer. But this amount of vitamin A, we get from food, especially that today a person consumes a lot of fatty animal foods, even exceeds the norm without any additives!
  3) The human immune system is very powerful and flexible at the same time; it is difficult to quickly break the immune system by all those experiments that hold the modern market to us. If you even be able to get more vitamins by eating an incredibly huge amount of vitamin supplements, your body will adapt and either learn to absorb vitamin in smaller volumes (the volumes that it needs for the normal life), or it will lead to diseases.
The commercial success of some advertised supplements confirms banal truth: we love to listen to nice about our bad habits. Promote bad habits for health is extremely beneficial. Unfortunately, it does not get less harmful. In this game, as always, the seller wins by playing on the placebo effect, receiving a huge profit.

Conclusion: Taking vitamins in the tablets, you, if the best happened, waste your money, if not - sick.
